This makes me so happy! Good people doing great things for sustainability, the food industry and in return for thousands of people who get to enjoy the glorious benefits. It never ceases to amaze me what a little ingenuity and a lot of passion can see people achieve. This weekend I finally made it to The Cooks Co-op, rumoured to be a chef and food-lover’s paradise nestled in the hills of Wisemans Ferry. Here for a close family friend’s milestone 50th, some of the food and wine industry’s most fun, festive (and long-achieving) members gathered to ring in the next half-century of our favourite CP.

Martin Boetz’s ‘The Farm’ is the hub of the project, focused on sustainable farming and building relationships with fellow farmers and food producers in the Hawkesbury region. We were lucky enough to enjoy the rustic ‘Event Shed’, a dedicated alternate dining and events venue, AKA a magical forest garden shed surrounded by sweeping gums and fire pits, with hay-bale seats and deer-pelt covers, and long reclaimed wood tables as far as your eye can see.

Food by Martin himself for Cooks Co-op included a paella pan the size of which would compete with a child’s paddling pool, homemade pickles, a white bean and garlic dip disguised as an irresistible pale green smear atop the world’s crackliest crackers and of course some showpiece roast chickens and veggies from the garden.

Wines by “The Rockstar of the Wine Industry” Lisa MGuigan with the world’s sexiest labels (silver foil with the shape of the design embossed right into the bottle) designed by the lady herself lubricated us into the afternoon as we participated in renditions of Xanadu and a traditional Maori birthday address.

Now all I need is to find an excuse to stay at the Cooks Co-op Cottage to wake up to this view. Sigh.

Happy birthday CP! We love you. xoxox
